Greta Bridge carries the A66 towards West Cumbria

Greta Bridge carries the A66 towards West Cumbria

To the Sea

October 19, 2019

‘With the invention of the sublime, Romantic poets flipped light into darkness, reason into fear, and transformed the perception of England’s Lake District from a spectacle of “holy terror” to a tourist destination. Today, caravaners who continue down the A66 road to the Cumbrian coast will find a post-industrial landscape whose cultural inheritance is buried or repressed — that is, subliminal.’

‘In these domestic travel writings, reminiscent of Jonathan Raban or Iain Sinclair, John Scanlan tours West Cumbria, framing its history in stark contrast to the “other Cumbria” of the Lake District. Without pretence to immutability, he finds West Cumbria to be dynamic, having always ‘pointed itself towards the future through industrial change and both in and out migration.’ — Cumbria Life magazine.

‘Does a remarkable job in capturing the essence of this region’ —Tidelines magazine
