Burgh by Sands. The memorial to Edward I, who died at this spot in 1307. Located several miles from Carlisle and close to the Cumbrian coast, Edward – so-called ‘Hammer of the Scots’ – was on his way to the coast to sail across the Solway to quell a Scottish uprising that was moving in his direction, apparently inspired by the rumour that he was already dead. ‘Does a remarkable job in capturing the essence of this region’ —Tidelines magazine
